TECH Freire Charter School

2221 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19132

TECH Freire opened in 2016 to integrate Freire’s signature rigorous liberal arts curriculum with comprehensive education in technology. We take risks and embrace innovation to make sure our students are prepared for the future.

“The same old way of doing things is not good enough for our kids.”

David Shahriari, Head of School/CEO

At TECH Freire, we reject violence and insist that every community member be supported in being true to themselves. We believe in mediation, student and family counseling and conversation circles, not in school police and metal detectors.

We’re also a school of many firsts. The first Freire school to feature makerspaces — complete with laser cutters, virtual reality and more — on campus and fully integrated into the school’s curriculum. The first to form an Entrepreneurship Club in partnership with the Fox School of Business. The first to compete in the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) Challenge through a partnership with Temple's College of Engineering. The list goes on—and there are many more firsts to come.

Located in the heart of Strawberry Mansion in North Philadelphia, TECH Freire empowers urban youth to unleash their potential. We recognize the urgency of our mission so we do whatever it takes, and we serve where the need is greatest to maximize our impact. If you are an authentic, passionate and tenacious educator with a desire to serve, grow and lead we would love to have you as part of our community.

Freire Charter School Wilmington

201 West 14th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801

Freire Wilmington opened its doors in 2015 with a unique five-year high school program beginning in 8th grade. Freire’s proven college-preparatory academic program offers Delaware students a much-needed free, high-quality educational option, especially when only 3 of the 36 other public high schools in Delaware exceed the national average (68%) for college enrollment.

“Our students are taught as the leaders that they are.”

Paul Ramirez, Head of School, Academics

On 2016 8th grade assessments, Freire Wilmington students grew at a rate more than 1.5 times the state average in all subjects in a single year. Our students also scored higher in all subjects than middle schools in the Christina, Colonial, and Red Clay school districts.

The Freire Wilmington community is a true family, where students and teachers work together to build the future each student wants and deserves for themselves.

Freire Charter Middle School

1026 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Freire’s youngest dragons have a motto: “Breathe Fire!” Freire Middle School, founded in 2012 to serve students in grades 5-8, is a school where students voluntarily redo assignments in order to prove to themselves and their teachers that they are continually growing.

“Freire is a supportive learning environment for both students and teachers alike.”

Melissa McCay, 7th Grade Science Teacher

Most of our students arrive several years behind grade level. At Freire Middle School, they don’t just catch up — they make leaps in achievement, setting them up for even greater success in high school.

Talk to any teacher in our building, and their energy and positivity are immediately palpable. From our home-grown teacher coaching program to teacher-led professional development, Freire Middle School is a place for teachers who want to hone their craft and develop as leaders.

Freire Charter High School

2027 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103

One of the oldest charter schools in the Commonwealth, Freire High School was founded in 1999 as the Freire network's flagship school. Our remarkable 15-to-1 student to faculty ratio allows us to provide the focused attention each of our students need to catch up, then surpass expectations.

"We do whatever it takes to help kids get to college."

Ayinde Tate, 11th Grade Academic Advisor

And people have noticed. We have been recognized as a Title I Distinguished School and are four-time winners of the Keystone Award for Academic Excellence. We’ve made the U.S. News and World Report's "100 Best High Schools" list, and the Metro calls us a top-five Philly charter school.

But what’s more valuable to us than any of this? The collective success of our Freire graduates.
