One of the oldest charter schools in Pennsylvania, Freire High School was founded in 1999 as the Freire network's flagship school. Our remarkable 15-to-1 student to faculty ratio allows us to provide the focused attention each of our students need to catch up, then surpass expectations.
And people have noticed. We have been recognized as a Title I Distinguished School and are four-time winners of the Keystone Award for Academic Excellence. We’ve made U.S. News and World Report's "100 Best High Schools" list, and Metro calls us a top-five Philly charter school.
But what’s more valuable to us than any of this? The collective success of our Freire graduates.
"We do whatever it takes to help kids get to college."

On Teaching at Freire: There’s flexibility in the classroom—you’re able to design your own curriculum, you don’t have people breathing down your neck to do it their way, yet you also have a ton of support. Freire is a place where people believe in you. If you’re hired here, it’s because they believe you’re talented and you can do this and we want to see you bring something to the table. This is a place where our teachers gladly work hard every year to get better, no matter how great you are or how long you’ve been here. I’m always trying to improve as a teacher, and Freire’s great about that. There’s constant support, there’s always people to talk to, people willing to help out.
